8.8.2010 - from Hintermuhr (Arsene hut) to Rotguelden lake (1.739 m)

Once more we drive into the uppermost Mur valley, but this time we park the car some km before the last parking place, near the Arsenhaus ("Arsene hut" - the name comes from a disused arsene quarry nearby). From there we walk up a side valley of the Mur valley on a small asphalted road up to Lower Rotgueldensee and the homonymeous hut..

Upwards we go, some plates distract from the strenuousness of the ascent.

Wild Oregano (Origanum vulgare) ...

 ... with a visitor.

Candle Larkspur (Delphinium elatum) is rather frequent here.

Rosebay Willowherb (Epilobium angustifolium) near the beck

Rather high up already.

A beck falls down from Schwarzmannkar beneath Vorderer Schober (2.681 m).

Arrived in front of the dam. Rotguelden lake was much smaller in former days, when the water power plant of Hintermuhr was constructed, the dam was built, and water from the Mur near Sticklerhuette and from the Karwasser lake (the valley in between) was joined in by tunnels. The powr station is in Hintermuhr at an altitude of 1131 m. Since 2009, the power plant also is a pump-storage hydroelectric plant.

The view to the mountains is now widening.

(Lower) Rotguelden lake with Hafner (3.076 m), to the right is Petereck (2.893 m), in between Wastlkar scar (2.721 m).

Panoramic view of the lower Rotguelden lake, far right is Rotguelden lake hut. Click here or into the picture for a larger version.

The water fall bewteen upper and lower lake.

Wild angelica (Angelica sylvestris) growing on the dam ...

... attracting many visitors, as ever.

Candle Larkspur (Delphinium elatum) growing on the dam.

On the dam near the hut Damm Clustered bellflower (Campanula glomerata)

A good refreshment after the strenuous ascent.

The girlies are relaxing, and I go for a short stroll to take some pictures, before the clouds draw in. Zooming in to Groszer Hafner (3.076 m). Its glacier is melting rapidly and will have been disappeared in a few decades.

Flowers at the lake.

Ochsenkopf

Die Rotgueldenseehuette, in the background Kreuzhöhe (2.521 m) and Marislwand (2.529 m) as well as Grieszenspitze (2.504 m).

I walk along the lake for a small bit.

View back to the dam...

 ... and a view to Silbereck (2.810 m)

Clouds are drawing in now ...

 ... also behind Hafner.

"Periwig knapweed" (Centaurea pseudophrygia)

It is cloudy now. We make up for a start and reach the car on dry foot - however, on the drive home, we are going through a heavy rain shower.
