Nesselgraben 20.5.2018

Herwig Gießwein was told about botanically interesting Nesselgraben on Schneeberg. A good opportunity for a round walk from Losenheim, and to also show Herwig the masses of Elder flowered orchids beneath the Almreserlhaus a to have a look at the flowers of the Mamauwiese.

Good that we had an early start, because this Common European Viper (Vipera berus) is still rather stiff from the night and doesn´t move, when I come close. It wouldn´t be wise to do this later on.

Soon after our start we find the first orchid: Early purple orchid (Orchis mascula)

Round headed rampion (Phyteuma orbiculare)

Fragrant orchid (Gymnadenia conopsea)

Clouded Apollo (Parnassius mnemosyne)

Meadow salsify (Tragopogon pratensis)

Aconite-leaf buttercup (Ranunculus aconitifolius) inside the forest ...

... as well as still lots of ramsons (Allium ursinum).

Alpine Avens (Alpen - Petersbart, Geum montanum).

We are now approaching the meadow with huge lots of Elder flowered orchids (Dactylorhiza sambucina).

Alpine Bird´s-foot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus var. alpinus ) and Field mouse-ear (Cerastium arvense subsp. strictum)

We walk a bit further in western direction to the next meadow. Globeflowers (Trollius europaeus) are growing here ...

... and, on wet places, Cotton grass (Eriophorum sp.).

After a strenuous descent through steep forest, we walk down the wonderful Nesselgraben, a narrow valley.

Forget-me-not in abundance.

Lots of Alpine ragwort (Senecio subalpinus) in places

We walk down to the Putzkapelle without success in finding lady´s slipper orchids. On the forest road, we tunr to the east and walk along the slopes till we rech the large meadow called Mamauwiese. Schober in the backgound.
