Obersberg 10.6.2014

I make use of a beautiful summer´s day to walk on Obersberg with Herwig Gießwein. This time, we did not walk directly from Schwarzau im Gebirge, as we did on 1.10.2011, but we took the route from the small saddle near the Eckbauer. Not so much ascent, and much more grassland - hoping to see early summer flowers.

Our route on Obersberger Alm and further on to the summit.

As it is forecast to become as hot as 34 °C, we start our walk as early as 7:50.

On the first grassland above the Haselecker the first orchids are growing:

Common spotted orchid (Dactylorhiza fuchsii)

At the Obersberg limes.

A wayside shrine, even enlarged to a tiny chapel.

The last farm called the "Obersberger"

Once more the "Oberberg limes"

View to the Preintal. At the valley bottom to the right is the Schwarzauer Gippel.

In the otzher direction there is the Kuhschneeberg and Schneeberg.

Sword-leaved Helleborine - inmidst the dark forest I needed the camera´s flash.

A small grassland with dozens of common spotted orchids.

A small deforestation provides a view to the Rax massive.

Dark Green Fritillary on Cow Parsley.

Wood Cranesbill (Geranium sylvaticum)

Pond water Crowfoot (Ranunculus platanifolius)

The last leg of the path to the Obersberg Alm leads through a short hollow way ...

... which ends up in a huge meadow.

Early purple orchid (Orchis mascula subspecies signifera) is greeting ...

 ... in multiple exemplars

Herwig is interested in the orchids too. He has brought a blanket to cope with this situation ...

An idyllic place (apart from the hide!)

Mountain Cornflower (Centaurea montana) ...

... together with Globe Flowers (Trollius europaeus)

View from Obersberg to Schneeberg ...

 ... and Hochschwab ...

... as well as Rax. Herwig wants to know exactly how Schneeberg looks like and brought up his super - tele with the converter and a tripod.

Schneeberg.

The Waldfreunde hut near the summit of the Obersberg.

View from the summit cross to the west. Gippel (behind the tree top), Göller, in the background Dürrenstein, far right is Ötscher.

Zooming in on Hochschwab.

The view to Handlesberg (1.370 m)

On our descent, we find lots of globe orchid (Traunsteinera globosa)

Back at the Obersberg Alm

Schneeberg from the descent.

In the forest a White helleborine (Cephalanthera damasonium)
