21.9.2024: Stokmarknes - Straume - Stokmarknes

As we like our hotel, we decide to stay for another night. We just cross the two bridges to the neighbouring island of Langøya and head for west via Sortland, to the small village of Straume. After a short walk along a fjord, we drive back to Stokmarknes.

First morning light. This is the view form the balcony of our hotel room, to the east ...

 ... and to the northwest.

Ten minutes later, tht sun rises over the Hadselfjorden.

An hour later, it is much lighter now.

Starting from the hotel ...

... and along the southeastern coast of the island of Langøya. View over the Sortlandssundet to the mountains of the island of Hinnøya.

Flat landscape at the northern end of the Eidsfjorden, to thew west confined by the mountain ridge of Reka with the prominent pike of Reka (609 m, "Shovel").

According to an old legend, the Eidsfjord-troll tried to dig a canal from the Eidsfjord to the Skjellfjord. The shaft of the shovel broke, and the troll threw it away. In this moment, the sun was rising and the pan of the shovel turned into the pike of Reka, wheras the shaft was transformed to the neighbouring mountain of Rekøya.
The Reka summit only can reached by difficult climbing up to grade 4 on its easiest way.

Grass-covered houses.

The last houses near the road have the name of the hamlet of Vikan, after a farmstead existing till about 50 zears ago. Three farmer families lived here from stockbreeding and fishing.
