Marzer Kogel 20.5.2015

With Herwig Gießwein on the Marzer Kogel, to look what´s new. Another friend of flowers has joined us, Michael, gardener from Vienna. We have a special deal with him ...

On the way to Marz we have a short visit to the Lady´s orchid (Orchis purpurea), which we found by chance last year..

This year, we saw several dozens of the Military orchid (Orchis militaris). Last year, they already were nearly withered.

View over Marz to the Rosalia mountains.

Also this year there are hundreds of Late spider orchids (Ophrys fuciflora)

Densely growing Late spider orchids (Ophrys fuciflora) in some places - they are so nondescript that you have to take care not to step on one.

White helleborine (Cephalanthera damasonium)

After a prolonged search, we found the remote grassland near the forest with these splendid specimens of a hybrid of  Lady´s orchid (Orchis purpurea) and Military orchid (Orchis militaris).

This one is nearly one metre high!

Military orchid (Orchis militaris) is also growing here.

This time we omit visiting the Rohrbacher Teichwiesen.

On the way back, we have a second look at the Lady´s slipper orchids (Cypripedium calceolus) - in the morning, they were in shadow. This was the deal with Michael: he wanted to see Lady´s slipper orchid, and he showed us the place with the Lady´s orchids.

On this clearing, also the angular Solomon´s seal (Polygonatum odoratum), ...

 ... the  bird´s nest orchid (Neottia nidus-avis) ...

... and lots of lilies of the valley (Convallaria majalis). We also see leaves of the black false hellebores, but the flowers only come out in July or August.
